Summer Yard & Landscape Maintenance Checklist
Summer in the South means long days, bright sunshine, and lush green yards—if you give them the care they need! A well-maintained yard isn’t just about curb appeal (though that’s important); it can also protect your home, prevent costly repairs, and make your outdoor spaces more enjoyable.
Whether you’re planning to sell or simply enjoy your home this season, here’s my go-to summer yard and landscape checklist.
Summer Yard & Landscape Maintenance Checklist
1. Keep Grass Healthy & Green
- Mow regularly, but don’t cut too short—keep blades at about 3" to help grass handle the heat.
- Water deeply, early in the morning, 2–3 times per week rather than shallow, daily watering.
- Sharpen mower blades for a clean cut that prevents lawn stress.
2. Trim Trees & Shrubs
- Remove dead or overhanging branches to protect your roof and siding during summer storms.
- Prune shrubs to encourage healthy growth and maintain shape.
3. Mulch Garden Beds
- Add 2–3 inches of fresh mulch to help retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and reduce weeds.
4. Weed Control
- Pull weeds before they seed to keep them from spreading.
- Consider applying a safe pre-emergent herbicide for long-term prevention.
5. Check Irrigation Systems
- Inspect sprinklers for leaks, clogs, or misaligned heads.
- Adjust watering schedules to account for rainfall and heat.
6. Inspect Fences & Gates
- Tighten loose hardware, repair broken boards, and touch up paint or stain to protect against sun and moisture damage.
7. Clean Outdoor Living Spaces
- Power wash patios, decks, and walkways to remove dirt, pollen, and mildew.
- Inspect outdoor furniture for wear and tear, and freshen cushions.
8. Monitor for Pests
- Watch for fire ant mounds, wasp nests, and other insect activity near your home.
- Keep mulch and plants at least 6" away from your foundation to discourage termites.
9. Prepare for Storm Season
- Secure or store lightweight items that could become projectiles.
- Clear gutters and downspouts to prevent overflow during heavy rain.
If you’re thinking about selling, your yard is the first
thing buyers see—and summer is your chance to make it irresistible. Even simple
touches like a freshly mowed lawn, potted flowers by the front door, and clean
walkways can boost perceived value.
A little summer yard maintenance goes a long way in keeping your home beautiful, safe, and ready for whatever the season brings. If you’d like a personalized list of curb appeal upgrades for your home, I’d be happy to help!
