Clean Gutters and Downspouts – Protect Your Home from Water Damage
As fall arrives in the Southeast, leaves, pine needles, and debris begin piling up in your gutters. While it may seem like a small task, cleaning gutters and downspouts is one of the most important steps in seasonal home maintenance. Clogged gutters can lead to water pooling near your foundation, roof leaks, and even pest problems.
Here’s a simple checklist to keep your gutters flowing freely this fall:
Tools You'll Need:
- Sturdy ladder (preferably with a stabilizer)
- Gloves
- Trowel or gutter scoop
- Garden hose with a spray nozzle
- Bucket or tarp (to collect debris)
- Plumber’s snake or wire hanger (for stubborn clogs)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Set Up Your Ladder Safely:
- Place the ladder on a stable surface. Avoid leaning it against the gutters as this can cause damage.
- Use a ladder stabilizer if possible, and always have someone nearby to assist.
2. Scoop Out Debris:
- Put on gloves to protect your hands from sharp debris or pests.
- Start near a downspout and scoop out leaves, twigs, and dirt using a gutter scoop or trowel.
- Place the debris into a bucket or onto a tarp on the ground to avoid making a mess.
3. Flush the Gutters with Water:
- Once you’ve removed most of the debris, use a garden hose with a spray nozzle to flush out the remaining dirt.
- Work your way toward the downspouts to ensure proper drainage.
- Watch the water flow to check for any leaks or blockages.
4. Check and Clear Downspouts:
- If water isn’t draining properly from the downspouts, there might be a clog.
- Insert the hose into the downspout and spray water at high pressure to try and dislodge the blockage.
- For stubborn clogs, use a plumber's snake or a wire hanger to break up the debris.
- Make sure your downspout splash guards are directing water at least 3’ away from your house.
5. Inspect the Gutters:
- Check for sagging gutters, leaks, or areas where the gutters are pulling away from the house. Repair or replace damaged sections as needed.
