Cozy Season Is Coming: Your Fireplace Safety Checklist
There's something special about the first fire of the season. Before you light it, however, make sure your fireplace is ready.
Start With an Inspection
If you have a wood-burning fireplace or stove, have the chimney inspected and cleaned as recommended by a qualified professional.
Check that the damper opens and closes properly, and make sure the area around the fireplace is free of anything flammable.
Check Your Safety Equipment
Fall is also an excellent time to test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home. Replace batteries as needed and replace units according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Stock Firewood Safely
If you burn wood, keep firewood dry and stored appropriately outside the home rather than directly against the house.
And never leave a fire unattended.
A few minutes of preparation can help make fireplace season both comfortable and safer.
Homeowner tip: If your fireplace hasn't been used in a long time or you notice unusual odors, smoke problems or damaged components, have it inspected before using it.
