What Can a Heavy Rain Tell You About Your House?
With all of the heavy rain we’ve had this summer, we’ve had rain on the mind. More specifically, what kind of damage can these heavy rains do to (and reveal about) your house? We’ve created a checklist of items can be checked a day or 2 after a heavy rain so you can see what may need repaired before the next one!
Roof:
- Check for missing, damaged, or loose shingles.
- Look for any signs of leaks in the attic or ceiling.
- Inspect flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights for damage.
Gutters and Downspouts:
- Ensure gutters are not clogged and that water is flowing freely.
- Check downspouts to make sure they direct water away from the foundation.
- Look for sagging or detached sections.
Windows and Doors:
- Inspect seals and caulking for any signs of leaks.
- Check for water stains or moisture on window sills and door frames.
Foundation:
- Walk around the exterior of your home and check for pooling water near the foundation.
- Look for any cracks or signs of shifting in the foundation.
- Check the basement for signs of water intrusion or dampness.
Interior Walls and Ceilings:
- Look for any new stains, discoloration, or bubbling paint that could indicate a leak.
- Pay close attention to areas around windows, doors, and the ceiling.
Basement or Crawl Space:
- Inspect for any standing water or dampness.
- Check for mold or mildew, which can start to grow quickly in damp environments.
- Look for any cracks in the walls or floors.
Yard and Landscaping:
- Check for erosion or soil displacement around the foundation.
- Ensure that landscaping isn't causing water to pool near the house.
- Inspect trees for broken or leaning branches that could pose a hazard.
Siding and Exterior Walls:
- Look for any signs of water damage, such as peeling paint or warped siding.
- Inspect for any cracks or holes that could allow water to penetrate.
Driveways and Walkways:
- Check for pooling water or erosion that could undermine the structure.
- Look for cracks or shifting in the pavement.
Outdoor Equipment and Furniture:
- Inspect outdoor furniture, grills, and other equipment for water damage.
- Ensure that any electrical outlets or systems are safe and dry.
By performing a thorough check after a strong rain, you can identify and address issues before they become more serious problems.
