Fall Home Maintenance Checklist
As the summer heat fades and cooler weather sets in, fall is the perfect time to prepare your home for the months ahead. In our area, the climate brings unique maintenance needs—ranging from managing humidity, falling leaves, and fluctuating temperatures to the storms we often face during hurricane season. Staying ahead of seasonal tasks not only protects your property but also helps maintain its value over time.
Here’s our practical Fall Home Maintenance Checklist to keep your home in top condition:
· Inspect and Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Falling leaves and pine needles can quickly clog gutters, leading to water damage or foundation issues. Clear out debris and check that downspouts direct water away from your home.
· Check Your Roof: Look for missing, loose, or damaged shingles. In the Southeast, heavy rains and the tail end of hurricane season can reveal vulnerabilities. Addressing small issues now can prevent costly leaks later.
· Service Your HVAC System: Fall is a great time to schedule an HVAC inspection. Replace air filters and ensure your system is ready for cooler weather. This also helps with indoor air quality, especially in humid areas.
· Seal Windows and Doors: Check for drafts around windows and doors. Sealing gaps with weatherstripping or caulk can improve energy efficiency and keep your home comfortable as temperatures drop.
· Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: With the upcoming holiday season and more indoor heating use, make sure your detectors are functioning properly and replace batteries as needed.
· Prepare Your Lawn and Garden: Rake leaves, aerate soil, and fertilize your lawn to promote healthy grass growth in spring. Trim back shrubs and trees, especially those near the home, to reduce storm damage risks.
· Clean and Store Outdoor Furniture: Extend the life of your outdoor furniture by cleaning and storing it properly. Cover or bring inside grills, cushions, and patio sets to protect them from moisture and mold.
· Check Weather Safety Supplies: Hurricane season continues into November in the Southeast. While we don’t have hurricanes often in our area, we do experience the downed trees, loss of power and flooding associated with those storms. Ensure flashlights, batteries, bottled water, and emergency kits are stocked and accessible.
